1.) How did you get your start into gaming and content creation? Walk us through your journey
I’ve been gaming since before I can remember. My mum bought a Super Nintendo to play Mario on when I was a baby think late 1991 early 1992, and when I could hold the controller started teaching me how to play.
When I was about 15 I started streaming my World of Warcraft raids using a janky Adobe encoding setup on some random site of which I no longer remember the name. I made the move to Twitch in 2012 to play team games with the original Team Distinct.
I’ve been streaming on and off ever since and even in the last two years remade Team Distinct into the Distinct Nation, a collection of lovely steamers and their communities. Now I stream the games I enjoy when I can find the time and the development of my Twitch AI assistant Cerebrum, which has been one of the most fun projects I’ve ever worked on.
I’m looking forward to what comes next on my streaming journey with my friends in the DN and the community I’ve been lucky enough to build.
2.) What was the most memorable gaming moment for you? What made it memorable?
I have so many amazing moments in my 30+ years of gaming that it is hard to pick just one.
When I was able to start speed running Super Mario world and got my speed down to 10 minutes was amazing. Really felt like I mastered my first ever game.
In more recent history, when I was able to stop using build guides in Path of Exile was amazing. Might seem like a small thing, but getting enough of a handle on that game to not just put your own build together but pilot it into the top 1% of content is very rewarding. Both are really memorable because these are the moments where the play time and the dedication really paid off and showed I really understood the games I was playing.
3.) What are some of the obstacles you have run into and how have you worked on getting past them?
I think I’ve been my own biggest obstacle in not only streaming but life. I’ve found in the past I often second guess myself, leading to not wanting to stream for large stretches of time and even doubting myself at work and in my career. I am proud to say that I’ve mostly overcome this thanks to some positive thinking, hard work, and support from friends and family.
4.) When you aren’t gaming – what is it you enjoy doing?
When I’m not gaming I’m working on databases or software. My day job is as a database administrator and developer for one of the top 20 universities in the world, won’t say which but those who are paying attention will figure it out.
I also own a software development company under which Cerebrum and other products are developed. I’m very lucky to have found a career that I’m so passionate about. My work doesn’t feel like work at all.
5.) Final question – If you could change the ending to one game or movie, which game/movie and how would you change it?
Easy answer. Assassin’s Creed 3.
The way Desmond sacrifices himself to activate the apple. I felt between the less than exciting story in the past, and the build up to something so very grand It felt so very anticlimactic. I actually quit the series over this end.
I’d have changed it so Desmond didn’t need to die, then made the following games about trying to find a way to reseal that nasty piece of work that he freed in 3
